Commercial fisherman in the south west of Western Australia say there wasn't enough consultation between the State Government and commercial sector over a ban on beach net fishing. The WA Government banned commercial net fishing from the shore in an area from Port Geographe to Augusta. The ban aims to resolve long-standing issues between commercial and recreational fisherman in the area. But commercial fisherman Alan Miles says the ban will hurt local consumers.
"Commercial fisherman are a service industry, we take fish from the ocean and we provide it for sale to the consumer and that's what our license with the Government says, that we have a right to sell fish," he says. "So wherever we're taken out of an exercise or part of a resource is given to another sector without us being included, then at the end of the day it's the consumer that loses."
