Fishing for life lessons in Granite City

More than 50 children got free fishing equipment at the kick-off of the Shielded Waters fishing program Wednesday in Granite City. The program is operated by the Police Department and targets at-risk children — especially those without a strong male influence.

Several officers who were also members of the Steel City Bassmasters fishing club began the program three years ago. Community groups and local businesses have made donations. "I think it's had a great effect," said Detective Brian Cave, one of the organizers.

"One of our kids has jumped a grade. He was having problems in school and since he's started our program he has actually jumped up a grade," Cave added. "I love it," said Joyce Hicks, who brought her grandchildren Kemondra Brown, 4, and Kayla Brown, 3.

As she talked, they played with their new rods and reels. "I like fishing anyway, and I like going camping and taking my grand kids camping and fishing," she said. Lauren Embrey, 19, was also at the event. "I was never too good at school, so I didn't get any awards. But since I've been in here I've got three trophies."

Christopher Bryant, 13, said: "I like to fish a lot. I just like the struggle."Another participant in the program, John Kudelka, 16, said: "I helped the little kids out. And I enjoy fishing myself — just waiting for the right fish."

Through the summer and fall, the group will plan monthly fishing trips with about 15 participants. Cave said the program goes on as long as the weather is good. "We've been all over the place trying to find a good spot. We've been everywhere from around here to busing them someplace," he added.

The kick-off, held at the Granite City Township Hall, included demonstrations in knot-tying and fishing safety, a video, and the distribution of donated fishing equipment. The program targets children and youth 8-17. "It looks like we have a good draw tonight from that age group," said Detective Lt. Craig Knight, another organizer.
