Posted in : NEWS

(added last year!)

AMADOR: Surface temperatures are at 61, and trout are becoming more active. A fishing derby begins Friday and runs through April 30. 209-274-4739.

ANDERSON: Bass are concentrated 25 to 35 feet deep. Drop-shot, spoon or use drag jigs in 10 to 20 feet. 408-927-9144, 408-463-0711.

BERRYESSA: Trout will be found near the surface, and bass will go deep and group in coves and creek channels. 916-502-3474.

CAMANCHE: Many anglers report easy limits of trout from shore and boat. 209-763-5915, 209-763-5166.

CHABOT: Water is a bit murky, but trout fishing remains decent. Limits are rare, but most anglers get two per outing. 510-247-2526.

CALERO: Bass are holding deep. Jigs, swimbaits and drop-shotting 12 to 20 feet will get bites. 408-268-3883, 408-463-0711.

CHESBRO: Catfish 8 to 10 pounds are being caught early in the morning. 408-358-3741, 408-463-0711.

CLEAR: Bass have moved into shallower water while catfish have moved deep. Minnow bite provides the best action. 707-994-3474, 707-279-4739.

COYOTE: Shore access only, so if you go, expect a mess. 408-463-0711.

DEL VALLE: East Beach has been the hot spot for trout 2 to 3 pounds. Black bass are active in the Narrows. 925-449-5201.

LAKE SAN ANTONIO: Catfish are found across from marina. Stripers boil randomly, but anglers catch one here and one there. Traffic is light. 805-472-2818, 800-310-2313.

plants are planned for Dec. 3 and 17. Traffic has been light. 925-371-2628.

McALPINE: Nightcrawlers or Power Bait get trout mornings and evenings. Bass are deep in warmer water. Use Senkos. Catfish will take typical baits. 831-623-4263.

QUARRY LAKES: Good trout bite. Fishermen's Row has been a good spot. 510-544-3130.

SAN LUIS RESERVOIR: Forebay and main lake are fishing well. Trolling with shad crankbaits and broken-back Rebels gets stripers. Get out at sunrise. 408-463-0711.

SANTA MARGARITA LAKE: Jigs get bass 4 to 5 pounds. Bass are deep and scattered. Catfish to 12 pounds take cut baits near dam. 805-438-1522.

SHADOW CLIFFS: More than 3,000 pounds of trout have been planted this month, making it the best stocked lake in the East Bay. 510-544-3230.

UVAS: Get catfish in the early morning. Night fishing is too cold. 408-463-0711.

RIVERS

AMERICAN: Salmon fishing has been slow. One good surge of fish went through, and there has been nothing behind it. 916-863-5866.

SMITH: River crested at Jedediah Smith at 16 feet Tuesday and will drop into fishable condition Wednesday. Lots of salmon in the system, and higher and less-clear conditions should spur a very good bite. 707-487-2278.

RUSSIAN: Steelhead numbers are light -- fewer than 40 have crossed the Forestville counting station, but more will arrive with each rain. 707-869-2156.

SACRAMENTO (Lower): Trout fishing has been good from Posse Grounds in Redding downstream to Anderson. Egg patterns or nymphs are best, but there has been some dry fly action. Salmon fishing has been so-so. 800-670-4448.

TRINITY: Upper stretch of river is low and clear, and cold weather has made fishing tough. 530-623-4999.

TRUCKEE: Access is very limited on California side. There might be some access near Hirschdale. Glenshire stretch has no parking, because of snow. 530-587-4844.

DELTA

FRANK'S TRACT: Striper bite is good all over the tract. Swimbaits and topwater lures work. Black-bass bite has been tough. 925-625-2441.

PITTSBURG: Chain Island, PG&E and the pumphouse are good spots for sturgeon. Eel and salmon roe are the best baits. 925-252-0151, 916-777-6498.

RIO VISTA: Shore anglers are using mudsuckers for stripers 4 to 10 pounds. Rio Vista to Sherman Island has been a productive stretch of water. Sturgeon are near Decker Island and Lindsey Slough. 707-374-2372.

SALTWATER

BERKELEY: Crabbing has been good. On Saturday and Sunday, the New El Dorado III had shrimp in its pots, too. Fishing for stripers and halibut has been slow. 510-849-3333, 773-4156 707-334-4827.

EMERYVILLE: Tuesday, 13 people had limits of crab and four stripers from San Pablo Bay. Trips are planned through the weekend. Crab limits have occurred every trip. 510-654-6040.

MONTEREY: Crab/sand dab combos bring back limits of crab and plenty of sand dabs. Trips are planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and there are openings. 831-375-5951, 831-372-7440.

PACIFICA: Crabbing has been good on the pier, but strong swells have been taking lots of gear. Make sure you have 6 or 7 pounds of weight on a conventional crab trap and at least five ounces on a snare. 650-355-8303, 650-359-9790.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY: The few people fishing the south bay have been catching sharks. Sturgeon anglers have yet to give it a good try. 650-589-3474, 510-703-4148.
